Any Preppers out there with A Fib?

Post by Bob »

decided to start the holiday weekend off with a little Spa treatment at the local Hospital.

Looks like I have A Fib. Home and doing well - normal activity, normal diet. On Cardizem and Eliquis.

So anyone ready for Zombies with this? any special instructions/considerations.

I will PM you as I don't want it on the open board.

Still on Cardizen/Blood thinners
O2 is doing fine, Pulse floating around 90, but still has irregularities.

Short term doing ok. Checking in in 90 days. On the good side - I appear totally asymptomatic.

Long term preparednes....I'll have to look into. Not optimistic.

Your pulse is rather high if that's a resting rate. O2 is something to continually monitor so get a Pulse Oximetor, they are inexpensive. And an Apple Watch 4 or higher which has the EKG feature. This will allow you to monitor with the same accuracy as the leads in the hospital (that's straight from my Cardiologists). You can also maintain a record of events if you have an Iphone as well.

Cardizen works fine but is not a long term solution. If you're not taking fish oil and CoQ10 you may want to seriously look into it. L-Carnatine should be taken with CoQ10. And also B12 of 5000mg daily and Vit D is often recommended.

Long term you may be looking at an Ablation. I had a double Ablation back in 2013. Basically, they snake two lines up each side of your groin and into your heart. Don't ask me why that's the starting position, I don't know. They cauterize the tissue that is causing the electrical issues. In my case I also had A-flutter. So they poked a hole from one top chamber to the other top chamber to cauterize tissue on that side as well.

The risks during surgery are very low, like 1% but they are serious. You could have a stroke due to clotting which is why you'd be on serious blood thinners for a month or so prior to the surgery. They have to freeze your esophagus area because of the heat being generated. If they have an issue they may have to immediately open you up. Again, low chance but they have to let you know.

Does it help? Well, yes and no. It is not going to fix the issue, certainly not long term. After the surgery and the internal swelling had gone down I would have an episode once or twice a year. That stayed that way for several years. But then it came back hard. Monthly, then weekly then every other day. That was in 2019 and I was a physical wreck. Hospitalized three times in three months. Medication and the absence of work stress backed it down to maybe once a month. But I do have 'micro' episodes where I'll go in and out of sinus rhythm, sometimes for hours. It may resolve itself or it may be a prelude to a full episode. The absence of work stress was a big factor for getting it less frequently. Which is why I retired.

Another Ablation is always an option but per my Electrophysiologist it won't fix the issue, at best it might less the frequency/duration. Being retired has done that.

I'm using a Pulse Oximeter.

I check casually every day a few times.

O2 always good, pulse varies from 60-90. Occasionally higher. They said ~90 is the high end of "OK" especially since I had no symptoms, and inside looked super clean according scan.

The Ex had Bradycardia and had an ablation. The doc said "We do more ablations here in retirement country a week than most places do a year..." I believe it.
