Things about "The Walking Dead" I hate
Things I hate about TWD:
1. The people don't learn ... they just bounce around from one bad situation to another.
2. They are not courious ... e.g. they meet new people but don't even ask what they did before the Zs
3. They don't develop ... they don't have any new skills since the first show.
4. They don't carry back packs, no less water or food.
5. They either are healthy or die, they don't get an infection or a fever.
Survival things that are crazy:
A. Somehow they have enough primers - the most complicated part of a bullet, that take advanced machinery to mfg. - for all their needs.
B. They don't go to a Walmart or Home Depot to see what they could use.
C. They carry small knives instead of a spear/sward to kill Zs
Other crazy things.
1. one guy carries a sharpened pole to kill Zs; yet he carries it tip down, which blunts it.
2. another guy rides around on a loud motorcycle that attracts Zs.

I quit watching after Negan(sp?).
As you said, they just stumble from one cluster to another. When they appear to learn, they immediately revert back. The villains are omnipotent until the plot says otherwise. Nobody even knows how to hold a gun, but they will makes running, one-handed headshots on zombies. However, they can't hit humans with full auto at close range.

I stopped watching around the middle of season two. One smart thing they did was go to a prison. Depending on the size of the jail/prison there will be ample stored food of a non perishable nature. There will be medicine out the wazoo as well as first aid supplies depending on the size of the facility. There will also be ammo and weapons. Our Uniform Supply warehouse was next to our jail and routinely had at least a half million rounds of various caliber service ammunition. Keep in mind that my agency was the fifth largest in the state and in the top 20 nationwide. So it will depend. Also they are well defended and study built for attack, weather etc.
But yeah, very little in the way of back packs, fire making supplies, bleach for water disinfection etc that I saw in those couple of seasons.
And by the later seasons, what were the Z's eating at that point?

When do all the unmanned nuclear power plants start melting down? Seems that would be a bit of a problem.
My thinking would be to find out where the islands are off the coast, get a boat and all the supplies I can load onto the boat and head to the island(s). Sure, if they were populated before they would have Z's but not as many as the mainland. And not all islands have a population. Only go to the mainland if/when you need something.

This thread demonstrates the fundamental flaw with the prepare mindset: Inability to compartmentalize ones preparedness from the rest of life.
I frickin' LOVE TWD, and FTWD!!! Greatest Zombie show EVER!!!! As for those who can't get into it...see my opening comment. It's a TV show. As survival, yeah it sucks. But so what? Did I mention it is a TV show???? You want survival, watch survival man. ZZzzzzzz. You want action, drama, suspense etc...watch TWD. Clearly you guys are too boring for interesting TV! The majority of the world seems to REALLY enjoy it.
I can imagine the list of amazing movies you all don't like: "The police wouldn't do that" "Gravity doesn't work like that" "The gun would run out of ammo". "A shark isn't that big!" etc.
Now, part II: Stuff like this is unbelievably useful. I love to play "What would I do?" with shows like that. They come up with crazy situations that you didn't make up for yourself. We all would have a strong bias towards having an answer and then coming up with the problem restricted to our own experience.
Lets discuss a few points:
Walmart: Supplies from China have stopped, so ZERO resupply. A Walmart, like a Grocery store operates on JIT (Just In Time stocks). They have 72 hours of anything you need, assuming that 1/3 of the supply turns over every 2 days or so.
* In Zombie Apocalypse (ZA) there would be a run on stores like you have NEVER seen.
* In ZA there would be no fire fighting - store would burn
* In ZA, survivors would raid any remaining for supplies immediately
So I'm calling 90 days into this thing, a Walmart would about the best guaranteed place to find absolutely nothing but Zed.
Now - as for the spears - an extremely valid point. I find their use of simple entanglement/obstacles frightening weak. This is all predicated on the "Slow" zombie, of course:
* A mere rope or wire single wrap fence through trees can slow or halt the things an immense amount
* Concentric rings of them would stop nearly all but the largest hoards, and even those would be slowed/spread out eventually by them.
* Simple wood debris on the ground is fast easy and free and causes them to fall.
* A 3 ft deep ditch that is 6ft wide is nearly impassable by them. Berm the dirt on the outside of the ring.
Put a row of a row wood debris, ropes, a row of wire, and then a ditch (easiest to harden, outer to inner). Have a simple patrol with 12' disposable pikes (all wood), 8' spears with steel tips, stocked around the area.
A few people could hold off a whole lot of those things. But obviously the "wall" is a great plot device. You defend it, it fails, chaos.
I'm gonna be all up in this thread! Great seasonal post!!!!

Back Packs:
The predominant thought on back packs and Zombies is that the back pack give the zombies a hand hold you just don't want. Yeah - you can slip out easily, but the one time you don't you are Zombie Chow.
I'd go with anything with a quick release only, and have a belt cutter on my shirt or whatever as a backup. I'd go with brightly colored bags and such. Easy enough to dump and come back for. But I'd never be anywhere but in the open with a back pack.
Much like reality - survival gear on my person, because bags would often get discarded.

Another good point ... they can not find one backhoe -large or small - or any earth moving equipment! Did they all disappear?
My main point is that these people are the same since day one for years.
My guess is that the series ends as a dream or a little boy reading the comics.
Re: Things about "The Walking Dead" I hate
In a real life situation, when a person is on a long trip, it would be best to have a light weight cart with large (mountain bike) tires to carry supplies and carry back to base the things scavenged. Look at some of the homeless today; you can learn a lot from them. Their cart carries a lot and it converts to a shelter with a simple tarp.Bob wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 12:28 pm Back Packs:

Back when we first started doing our SEP gatherings we tried all sorts of different gear in the field to see what worked and what didn't. On one trip we picked a primitive camping site that was about 5 miles out along a bike trail. Bob will remember it as Primitive #2 at Starkey. We all had our packs and bikes to get out to the site. I came up with the idea of connecting a moving dolly to the back of my mountain bike to haul more gear than I'd normally carry as an experiment to see how feasible it was. The idea was sound but the actual implementation left a LOT to be desired. In short, the dolly was structurally strong enough to haul gear but the tires were much too small to make it practical. A buggy with large tires would have been a LOT better. I was fine till about the second mile and then it was so hard to peddle the bike that you could literally walk faster. A platform with a bigger wheel base would have been much easier. So lesson learned. That's why vehicles like a rickshaw have a big wheel base.

And something like a rickshaw would be a very handy means of locomotion in a ZA. Doesn't rely on fuel, doesn't make a lot of noise, can carry a decent amount of weight, can act as a shelter and parts would be fairly easy located. While Walmart and other box stores would be stripped bear of food, ammo, camping gear etc you'd probably still be able to find bike inner tubes because it's not really thought of as an essential item to have/horde.
