Most important pieces of life saving device to carry

Post by cityfarmer »

I think most people are forgetting about a pieces of equipment we should always have with us when out in the woods. When we are hunting or working outdoors there is always the real threat of accidentally getting shot (AD/ND), getting cut or stabbed with a knife or saw, etc...things that can cause large blood loss.

When out and about, on my belt is my sidearm, spare ammo, knife and a tourniquet...sometimes a cellular phone too or it's in my pocket.

Most of the time I'm in the woods alone or with my son while hunting or working so I always carry a tourniquet on my belt on the left side carried in a magazine pouch with Velcro closure. I make sure my son has one on his belt on the left side too and then one or two in the truck. Each of my backpack and camelback has one in top stuffed into a magazine pouch too. I know a lot of people say they can just use a belt or piece of rope but by the time you get your head together and take off the belt and find a piece of wood to tighten it you could become unconscious from blood loss. You can bleed out in minutes and die few minutes after that.

I don't see the need to carry a small first aid kit on me as long as I can access one reasonably quickly at the truck but I'm never without a tourniquet or two.

Get couple of real tourniquets and learn how to use them correctly and keep them with you at all time out in the woods. It really is a life saving device.

I agree that a good tourniquet is an essential piece of gear, particularly if you’re camping or carrying a firearm. In my sling bag I also carry blood clot sponges and Israeli bandages. This in addition to a normal boo-boo+ FAK.

Any and all additional medical training is always a plus. I really appreciate all the First Responder training I receive over the course of my career.

My wife and I recently went to a "Stop the Bleed" class at the local senior center. It was a good refresher and caused me to dig out my trauma kits. I spend a lot of time in my woods alone cutting wood with a chain saw. Never been hurt and I'm very careful but you never know. I keep a trauma kit within reach.

Forgot to add that I also carry a disposable MTM CPR mask. The little key chain type that I keep in my EDC sling bag. Mine are in red and they look like these;

Question: While a real tourniquet would be ideal, any reason a belt or cord can't be used?

But if in the woods, or on my vest, I have blood stopper kits including essentials.

Got a link for those Dave? Like to look them up! Might be a good addition for me...

Any time I go hiking ( or anyplace more than an hour from help ), I always pack the SPOT.... https://www.findmespot.com/en-us/
I know I've mentioned it before, but it's its small and can get help when there is no cell service. I still use my old Gen 2 unit.
Not only sends Sat messgs, but others can see your track every 10 mins on line.
