Night vision options

In night vision, there are a few choices - body heat detection and non-body heat.  Each has some value and drawbacks. 

So, I was looking at what is available in non body heat detection for under $300.  It is same old stuff from the last few years.  When I look at the bottom negative ratings on Amazon, I am discouraged.  I know that Amazon is not the vendor.  It is a facilitator.  Merchants can sell fake goods, defective goods, and returns and pass them off as new and with factory warranties.  However, when I winnow through and the 1 star ratings are 8 -33% (out of 5 stars), I am not going to buy.

The best, non break the budget recommendations are not to buy anything that is on the market.

1.  take your existing equipment whether IR, body heat or binos and do the following:
     a.  check that they even work tonight;    
b.  have a person stand at recorded distances from your abode and make notes of distances, appearances, and whether your equipment actually works.    
c.  if you are rural, pick vantage points, use a subject, make notes of distances, appearances and whether your equipment actually works.

2.  I have multiple pairs of binos.  They each fill a niche.  I determined that the Bushnell Marine binos with range finding capability and a tripod hole were most acceptable in price (about $150) and performance. 

At a minimum, a person should consider having a pair of binos with a tripod as this would be a stabilized platform for consistent, long term monitoring of a situation.

I don't have a situation to monitor long-term. If I did, I'd probably go with standard 10x binos in hand so I could easily move around with them. My Leica rangefinder has clear glass and 6 or 7x so it could also be a monitoring optic with instant ranging added.
I guess if you have a clear zone of fire around your house, and a rooftop watchtower, a tripod mounted optic would be nice.
With relatively close neighbors, my defensive strategy is more indoor oriented.
