Does you plans cover this?

I know my family likes going to the parades. For years we were in the parades. I have watched a few videos shot from various spots along the parade route, those in the parade had no warning since the murderer cam from behind. Those in the crowd had a little warning, but most couldn't process in time what was going on to be able to get out of the way.

I guess there will be a movement to outlaw all SUVs because who needs an SUV that kill 5 people and injury 40+.

SUV uses lots of Fuel = Oil/Gas and Auto Profits plus UAW salaries. BP/Exxon/Ford/GM will not allow congress to do that.

But, without knowing the logistics, I generally like to know what is behind me. Open street w/ Cars I would usually avoid on principle.

Plus, if you are curious about the driver of the SUV:

In July 2020, police charged him with three other felonies – including reckless endangerment and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He’s also listed as a Tier 2 registered sex offender in Nevada.

A background check from Wisconsin's Department of Justice came back with over 50 pages of charges against Brooks stretching back decades. In 1999 he received his first felony conviction for taking part in an aggravated battery – for which he received three years of probation, records show.

He was convicted of obstructing an officer in 2005 and 2003. In 2002 he had another felony marijuana charge.

Beyond situational awareness it's hard to proactively protect yourself and your family in large gatherings. So many things could go wrong from a driver like this using a vehicle as a weapon to a sniper to someone planting a bomb.
A man cannot call himself peaceful if he is not capable of violence. If he's not capable of violence he isn't peaceful, he is harmless. There is a distinct difference.

Fate whispers to the warrior "You cannot weather this storm". The warrior replies, "I am the storm".

Yes, in a sense.

Years ago, I came to a decision. I took my son to a boxing match at the Forum in Inglewood, CA. If a fan became rowdy and started fighting, I warned my son not to react. A fan nearby ripped an arm rest off to throw it. Security was non existent. Since then, I have not been to a parade, a demonstration, a rock concert, a sporting event. I don't go to bars with two bouncers at the door. I don't go to weapons free zones where promoters make a profit selling beer.

If I had been local, I would not have attended the parade.

Yes. As said above stay away from crowds. They tend to attract the worst humanity has to offer.

My parade story...

A few decades ago I took the family to the Thanksgiving Day parade in Detroit. It's a big deal if you grew up around here and it is or was nationally televised. We set up to watch the parade on a side street next to an unmarked/unoccupied police car (I was a cop at the time). At first a couple native Detroiters set their kids on the hood. Eventually they moved to the roof of the car and others took their place on the hood. Soon some teenagers took over and were standing on the hood, roof and trunk. Then adults moved in. I mentioned to them that they were damaging a police car. "F--k da police" was the response.

"Time to leave" I said to the the family. As we walked away they started jumping up and down on the car. I did mention to a couple other obvious suburbanites that they may want to move away. A block or so down I saw a cop and mentioned that their car was being destroyed. He just shrugged in a kind of "boys will be boys" kind of way. I called a Detroit detective friend the next day and told him about it. He said, "yeah, they trashed that car, broke some other car windows and some store front windows, did a little bit of looting". Didn't hear about that on the news. Last time we went to the parade.

I don't think you should live in hole, avoiding life but you can be aware of your surroundings and have an exit plan wherever you go.
