Why do you need clean water?

Post by David »

Water filtration is a HUGE consideration. More people die each year, worldwide, from waterborne pathogens than warfare.

The World Health Organization says that every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of water related diseases, making it the leading cause of disease and death around the world. Most of the victims are young children, the vast majority of whom die of illnesses caused by organisms that thrive in water sources contaminated by raw sewage.
This section of this board deals with water disinfection products and methods.

Basically four main things in polluted water will make you sick and/or kill you;
  • Protozoa
  • Virus
  • Bacteria
  • Parasites

Top 10 Causes – Outbreaks in Public Water Systems*

  • Giardia
  • Legionella
  • Norovirus
  • Shigella
  • Campylobacter
  • Copper
  • Salmonella
  • Hepatitis A
  • Cryptosporidium
  • E. coli, excess fluoride (tie)
Any of these things can compromise you, make you sick, dehydrate you and make it difficult/impossible for you to effectively care for yourself or others. Add to this being in an emergency situation and the problem is compounded. You need a good product and/or method to make your drinking water safe (as well as the water used for hygiene). Take a look at the 'Water' section of the board for various ideas, methods and products.

I would recommend reading like Cody Lundin's, "When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes" and "98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive” as two good starting points.

A man cannot call himself peaceful if he is not capable of violence. If he's not capable of violence he isn't peaceful, he is harmless. There is a distinct difference.
