Gun Winter Is Coming: Article from Gunmag Warehouse

This is from the Gunmag Warehouse blog site. I thought it was a good article but I don't really think it's new information for a prep forum. Still worth the read IMO

Good article. Going over the basics is always a good idea not matter how well you may think your prepared.
  • 1. I feel pretty comfortable in this area. I'm not sitting on a million rounds of ammo in my spider hole, but I feel good about the amounts that I have, particularly in my two main calibers. That's as far as pistol and PCC. Rifle I feel I'm lacking in overall, but sufficient for most situations. My 'niche' calibers are main service calibers but are no MY main service calibers. I added them last year to be able to have access to those calibers. I don't have a lot of ammo in those particular calibers, but I don't shoot them that often either so the amount I do have is sufficient until things return to normal.
  • 2. Feel like I've got the basics down pretty well. Lots of mags. Some spare parts.
  • 3. For dry firing we have one of those laser cartridges that you can use your cell phone to see hits. Very useful.
  • 4. This is an area I'm very solid in. First Responder training, CPR instructor, somewhat extensive FAK and I've been in martial arts for 45 years and use to own my own school and teach.
  • 5. Covered in this department. I also have three pistols that are multi-caliber platforms. I like this concept a LOT and see it as maximizing the platform to it's fullest extent.
  • 6. Nothing to report in this area. All of my firearms are modern.
  • 7. This is an area that is almost non-existent for me, unfortunately. I have one small 9mm reloading kit but I have no supplies. When things return to normal this is an area I need to take a long look at.
  • 8. I feel solid in this area.
  • 9. I feel solid in this area as well. It follows my advise to students when I taught martial arts, 'best way to not get hit is not to be there in the first place'.
A man cannot call himself peaceful if he is not capable of violence. If he's not capable of violence he isn't peaceful, he is harmless. There is a distinct difference.

expect assault weapons ban and licensing of assault weapons. Use your own definition of assault.

Nice article to assess oneself:

1. Been kinda doing replace & shoot for a while

2. Really only have practical guns - except Cowboy .357. Have more than I need and double in every critical category

3. Need to get that laser phone thing Dave mentioned

4. Upped my Trauma game recently, Martial Arts not an issue....

5. Rigs are good to go

6. I own and shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun

7. Reloading is a gap....used to spend a lot of time with pappy as a kid doing that.

8. Car is 100% +, working on house...New fence soon. Discussing lights tonight while walking dog.

9. Good on situational awareness

Nice list to consider!

My only real disagreement is with point 7. It really doesn't matter if you reload or buy factory ammunition, your supply line is dependent on someone else. So the only advantage in reloading (IMO) is getting more components for the same amount of money than buying factory ammunition.

The key is having a good supply before winter hits.

Having said that, I do believe at some point they're WILL be an attempt to disarm us.

1. After the last ammo shortage, I had been buying and stocking up. You never feel like you have enough, but I'm in a better spot than I was in the last shortage.

2. I have a good amount of mags, extra springs, and the spare parts to rebuild my pistols if something would break.

3. We have the laser insert for the pistol and we have the laser targets around the house.

4. Medical skills I have covered. Medical supplies I have covered.

5. I would say I have this covered. I have setup a whole defense plan based on the Glock firearms that the wife and I use.

6. Last year we didn't shot as much as normal. Yet, we did practice with our carry pistols and rifles.

7. Thanks to my AWESOME wife I have this covered very well. Not only did she take care of me with buying a nice Dillion machine, she made sure we had sufficient reloading supplies. She said without the supplies you have an expensive paperweight. So, I should be able to weather the storm and watch for parts and pieces to come available and restock supplies.

8. We upgraded some of the outdoor lighting with LED lights. We have added outdoor cameras. Vehicles we keep maintained and serviced.

9. My situational awareness has both improved and decreased. On a larger scale, I have paid more attention to what is going on in our region, state, and nation. Trying to make sure I'm aware of planned gatherings and events going on. My personal awareness has went down since I have spent a year avoiding going to the stores and being in crowds. It actually has been nice, but my once a month trip to the store I need to work on paying more attention to what is going on and less time grumbling cause they have moved everything on me.

I'm pretty well covered in all respects.

In the process of furnishing the new house. Will be transferring a lot of my guns to it and am exploring ways to secure and hide them. It's a ranch style without a basement. Thinking of blocking off some of the bedroom closets with false walls and then securing the guns in safes behind the walls. Another option is digging out under the crawl space and hiding them down there. Another is cutting trap doors in the floor and putting them in a box built between the joists. Essentially a floor safe concept.

Still need to set up cameras and lights at the new house. We don't have internet up there yet.

By the way - always consider the source. This is a gun gear seller saying you need this stuff....

That said - still seems a decent list.
