BUG

Post by David »

If you've carried a BUG, do carry a BUG or might consider a BUG, what do you/would you carry? Where would you carry it (on body, in a bag, in a vehicle)? Just the ammo in the gun or spare mags, speed loaders or speed strips?

My wife suggested yesterday that it might not be a bad idea to toss my LCP in my sling bag when out and about. My Maxpedition Lunada has a couple of different CCW pockets on it and it's about as light as a BUG is going to get.

I've never really bought into the BUG idea. If I thought my primary wasn't enough, I'd pick a different primary. I'm not worried about my primary jamming and having to transition to a BUG. Maybe as a gun to arm a friend, but that's not a likely scenario to find yourself in.
Having a carry bag is the only possible way though. I already carry too much shit on me.

I carried one when I was a cop. Never felt the need as a regular citizen. Doesn't mean I don't have a gun or two in my truck to fall back on.

I'd say a boot knife would be the next move for a civilian.

A spare mag would be next.

The only need for a BUG would be a gun failure.

A civilian should be running away from trouble.

This is my thought. I'm not particularly concerned with my primary having an issue, but the possibility does exist with any firearm. If having a secondary didn't pose a problem (size, weight etc.) then it may be a prudent option. This is why I'm thinking about the LCP in the sling bag I'm going to be carrying anyway. Thinking out loud.

And I consider that a BUG. Doesn't necessarily have to be on-body but accessible if needed. Now this can have some carry-over to truck/trunk gun of course and then we're talking about the option of larger weapons systems and increased capacity.

Not so much in the advent of failure but as an extra. Perhaps for my wife or person with me.

Again, thinking out loud :)

Good point.

Another though ... "my handgun is used to get to my truck and my rifle."

I believe in having a BUG. Sadly I cannot risk getting caught carrying at work with a dress shirt and tie so I have been trying to find a great ankle holster for my Glock 42 or a P365 (when I get one). I keep a G19 in my car with spare mags and when I leave work it goes IWB. I also have an AR or 12ga. in the car most of the time. I am transitioning to my M17 and M18 as carry guns as well. Now that I just picked up the VTac I might carry it as well since the sights seem to be pretty slick. I used to keep a S&W Airlite in .38spcl. as a bug in a previous job when carrying a larger piece was not easily done. I also agree that the handgun is used to get to the car/truck for the bigger and badder tool.

What about something like an LCP or P32 or similar? Something small but practical to your required mode of dress. I have the LCP for when I’m dressed up like a wedding or some such event. Either pocket or ankle would at least give you something.

I have considered many small pieces. I like the 42 but love the feel of the P365. It is just finding the right holster. If I was in a different profession I would consider pocket carry but for what I do now it is not practical.

Gotcha. Well, I'll recommend the P365 over the G42. Not that the G42 isn't a nice 380, it is. But the P365 has more to offer overall.

However, the G42 would be lighter on the ankle so that might be a significant consideration in favor of the G42.
