Training

Post by David »

I taught my son to shoot back when he was around 12. I taught him firearm safety around the time he was 6 or so. He'll be 21 in less than a month and I will be signing off on his CCW paperwork. I gave him a Sig P365. Lately we've been going over training I feel is important prior to him carrying a firearm. Safety first and foremost of course. Breaking down drills from the holster. Cover and scanning the area. Cover and concealment. Reloading. Malfunction drills. Moving and slicing the pie and holding position. Later on I'll be teaching him one-hand manipulations like reloading and malfunction drills.

I'd like to be able to do a class with him as well with different instructors so he has a well rounded experience to to draw from. Right now he teaches music during the times the outlaw matches are happening but perhaps the opportunity will present itself for him to go to one of those as well.

It's been great for me as well as it's always good to go over basics as a refresher as well. And it's good father/son time.

In martial arts - I never get tired of the basics, and you can never be too good at them.

Never had firearms "training" per se. Certainly not tactical training.

The only firearms training I've been involved with is as an instructor. I've got a level 2 mechanics and fundamentals class next month to help some folks smooth things out.

Bringing this thread back to life.... I am going back to Sig Sauer Academy July 9th for more Handgun training and then again in November for their P320 Armorer's Course. After taking my first course ever there in May I decided I am going to try to go to trainings more. Training never gets old. I hope that as I train my son will want to go when he is a bit older and I hope to use what I learn to help him. My GF just shot a gun for the first time in her life with me a week ago and I am going to get her a class as they offer Handgun 101 for Women. I think she enjoyed shooting with me but she will learn and enjoy it more if taught in a comfortable environment by a professional.

That is fantastic! It is really satisfying to see folks, particularly women getting firearms training.

My wife, son and I went to the range yesterday (I gave the range report in another thread). The place was jam packed! The classroom was full (mostly woman) taking a CCW class. The range was full, we had to wait to get in. My wife talked with one of the employees and they said when the virus first hit they sold every firearm in stock. They restocked. When the riots started they again sold every gun in stock. They've restocked but there were a LOT of folks in yesterday buying guns. I'd say the place had about 5X the number of folks I've normally seen before.

Got back from the Outlaw match a bit ago. It was hot! But a lot of fun. Felt pretty good for not having been in a match for 7 1/2 months. Out of 102 rounds fired I had 65 ‘A’ zone hits and 25 ‘C’ zone hits (not sure why there are no B’ zones, just A, C and D). I missed 12 on the steel plates (which a lot of folks were having a hard time on for some reason). I put the first 4 down but the last 2 just wouldn’t go down. I’m chalking it up to this being the first time with the G19.5FS, first time with those sights and the fact I don’t shoot with my prescription glasses. I wear glasses for driving/distance. I don’t shoot with them because in the event I’m in a shooting I won’t be wearing them 99% of the time. So I want to train for as much realism as possible. So I feel pretty good about 90 good, solid hits out of 102.

My partner videoed me so I can review myself to see areas I need to improve. I need to work on my reloads a bit. I need to work on my time a bit as well. There were a few times I should have been quicker on rapid fire.

At least you're getting out and doing it. So many never even try. I can't count how many people have refused because they didn't want to embarrass themselves. Even worse are the ones who dismiss competition as useless.

How'd you place overall?

BTW you may find a B zone on the head depending on what targets you're using.

27 out of 32. Doesn’t sound great, lol. In actuality, as far as ‘A’ and ‘C’ zone hits I was only 4 total from the #1 guy. But these guys blaze through way faster than what I can do and time seems to be a really big factor in this type of match. A few considerations in my mind; a lot of these guys go every week and are accurate AND fast. Some are really fast but not as accurate but it seems time plays a big factor. Also I’m shooting 9mm whereas a lot of them are shooting 40 and 45 and I’m told that also factors in their favor. And I think I’m maybe being a little too cautious as far as moving at a fast pace. It’s been over 100 degrees with the heat index and I’m taking care that my heart stays in rhythm. Been over two months since I had an episode and I want to keep that going. So I’m walking it kinda quick but I’m not running and gunning it. So I’m trying to focus on accuracy and other skills rather than going all cheeta on the runs. Additionally, I’m looking at it more as a combat course than a competition course. What I mean is that when there is cover or a corner of a wall or whatever I’m trying to focus on cover/concealment skills rather than blasting it in the open for time. So I have no illusions of placing really high on the list because I don’t think I’ll match some of these folks times, which in and of itself is very impressive. But I can work on my time a bit while still working on other skills that I feel are important. Hope that makes some kind of sense?

But it was a lot of fun and I know have some visual feed back of things to work on.

Yep, and like Wyatt Earp is reported to have said, 'Fast is fine but accuracy is final'. :)
