Taurus, Ruger, Smith, or what?

Not to drift the thread too much, but my brother has a Taurus Public Defender .410/45LC revolver and loves it. He's dispatched a bunch of different critters over the last several years with it. I've always thought it would make the ultimate snake revolver. And of course you can load it with pretty impressive defensive loadings. Maybe not that effective across the parking lot, but for shorter ranges or HD it looks really good.

Neither of you are judging the cool factor of the possibility of 'Judging' a bad guy. Or the cool part of telling the bad guy afterwards, 'you've been judged'. Just saying.

I would prefer to "Govern" a bad situation, rather than to "Judge" it. However either is good, if the price is right.

Well, I think a Judge/Governor is fine for many of the intended uses it could fulfill. Again, using my brother as an example, when he first got it he lived out in the boonies on 26 acres. He used it to dispatch numerous pest critters. So that is a practical example of real world use. There are also several loads useful in close range SD. Certainly not that effective across the parking lot, but across the room (typical SD shooting distance) it is pretty decent and can make several holes.

The only thing it's good at is close pest control. Sadly, that's not what it was marketed or sold for. The argument that it is "pretty decent" for SD with the right loads is ignoring the fact most other guns are better for that role. Even if you just compare it to other revolvers, it's a huge framed gun with low capacity and questionable quality. The Governor at least gives you an extra round and better quality, but now you're at a much higher price point. Of course, you can load them with standard 45Colt rounds(or ACP in the Governor) to increase performance, but then you would be better off with a standard gun. Most people would be much better served by a 357 in 3-4". You'd have a handier gun in a potent caliber that holds 6-8rds and a wide assortment of ammo as well. A box of CCI rat shot would be perfect snake medicine too.

Back on topic....I've been loading up 357 mag loads for use in my Dan Wesson. So far they've been pretty stiff loads more suitable for a rifle as they tend to lock up my revolver. Perhaps my powder scale is out of whack as I am following the reloading manual. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
