Book: The Good Shepard aka Greyhound

Post by Mac66 »

This was the book the movie Greyhound with Tom Hanks was based on. Actually I think they went back and renamed the book Greyhound after the movie came out.

Written by C.S. Forrester in 1955 it is about an American Destroyer Escort captain in charge of escorting a convoy of ships across the Atlantic in WWII at the height of the U-boat threat. His convoy runs into a pack of U-boats.

The book is very good. I read it in two nights, hard to put down.

The movie changes some of the details of story but is actually very good as well.

C.S. Forrester also wrote the Horatio Hornblower series of books (which are also very good) and The African Queen which was turned into a movie with Humphrey Bogart.

The Good Shepard, not to be confused with the 2006 movie The Good Shepard starring Matt Damon about the CIA
