I know the CDC has flu death estimates for this season so far to over 8,000. Yet, people don't see very concerned about it. The news is giving all the attention to the new kid on the block, when it is the same old thing getting us.

Have they started pulling teeth yet?

(World War Z reference)

An imprisoned CIA agent that Gerry meets in South Korea, where he makes a brief stop (at night, so essentially none of the country is visible) tells him that North Korea had a singularly brutal solution to the crisis: “They pulled the teeth of all 23 million in less than 24 hours."

The Flu shot is not a scam Dave, it's a real thing. That said...you are not likely to be in the "need to get one" category.

- There is definitely flu variation, so efficacy varies.
- Even if you get the flu (it's a moderator, not a cure) the symptoms are less.

You are just choosing to be a stubborn ignorant curmudgeon. And that's ok. Just don't blame it on being a scam. And I'll agree autism/MMR shots...that may very well be a real thing. But not flu shots.

The cost is pretty much covered by our exorbitantly expensive healthcare system anyway. As you get older/weaker though...you should get serious about. Corona Virus - meh. I have been on CDC calls about Pandemics. The Flu will effect up and kill way more people in the early spring than this.

And as for info from China - yeah...that's all accurate. Hell - they would shoot 100,000 people and throw them in a ditch just to make sure that fat people didn't eat all the popcorn at the Emporer's favorite movie theater for the debut of the new Star Wars movie.

Nope, it's a scam. And a danger. However, feel free to take the one I won't get as an extra

Everything I read seems to show that this coronavirus is not much more than a cold for most people. Yet, the response that China and other governments, including our own, doesn't make sense to me. If this isn't much worst than a cold, why the response? The typical flu will kill 8,000+ just in the US, yet we don't quarantine everyone. I was thinking the coronavirus was basically media hype, yet I can't explain the response from the different governments. Confused on what to think about this.

China sending in 1,400 medical staff, seems like a lot for people that just have a cold.

The big - I think - is that it is a mutated form. When a virus jumps species...that can be bad. And as for China, like I said, I have no idea what they would/might do. But as a fairly totalitarian regime, they easy could say "Quarantine" and make it happen purely for convenience. I saw some SARS vs Corona vs Flu stats that suggested 'whatever' regarding this. And well, media. Never fail to describe a molehill as a mountain if it gets ratings and advertising dollars.

And yes Dave - I agree that there are financial motive behind a lot of medical things. Like I said - the MMR vaccine....lots of questions around that. But to say that the Measle, Mumps, or Rbella vaccine is roughly saying you think witchcraft is effect. And there is definitely some Big Pharma shenanigans around it that suggest profit motive in it's current form.

But can you provide any evidence of a scientific nature that demonstrates that flu vaccines in general are NOT effective at reducing the rate of flue acquisition, or that it does not reduce severity when it is acquired? I'd like to see it.

Use your google-fu. Not fringe sites but from various doctors and such. Think about this; a school with 500 kids. 499 are immunized and 1 isn’t. People lose their minds because of the ‘danger’ the one kid presents. Why? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? After all the 499 are immune right? Same with the flu shot. If you get it and I don’t...who should be at risk? Yet I know people that have had the shot and got sick...and I haven’t. Lots of good info out there from doctors and other sources.

Not argumentative. Just providing information. Getting an inoculation of anything does not automatically give immunity. When a person researches say the flu vaccine, he learns that the contents are speculative and the level of protection will range about 30-60%. What helps is a group of people getting inoculated and this can (not saying it will) reduce the spread or the rate of spread.

During the severe 2017-2018 flu season, vaccine efficacy was estimated at just 36%. ... The CDC estimates that the flu shot reduced the risk of H1N1 infection by about 46% among adults, and about 62% among children ages six months to 17 years old.Feb 14, 2019

I have a sister-in-law who worked for Kaiser. She did not believe in germ theory. Kaiser decided to give its workers an option, wear a face mask throughout your shift or get the flu shot. Kaiser made the decision on an economic basis. It cost way more to pay for a hospitalization of an employee or covered person. The shots are free.

I had a friend who was a lawyer (yep, I know the jokes). He was a heavy smoker. His doctor suggested he stop smoking. He didn't. He hadn't contracted lung cancer. He told his doctor to prove it. After he developed lung cancer, he asked his doctor if he should stop smoking. Nah, the doctor said to continue to smoking. And, when you research lung cancer and smoking, you learn that lung cancer rates went up after the invention of the automatic cigarette rolling machine.

You may always be able to find an exception to a principle or a rule. I had my gall bladder out at Kaiser. The rule said you must be discharged after a certain time. I was not ready and was discharged. Then I had to go back in. If you don't believe in shots, don't get one.

You know people who got the shot and got sick. But you don't know why or how they got sit.
Just like you know people that sat on a public toilet seat and got sick. But you don't know why.

I agree that you should not be compelled to get the shot. Much as you should not be compelled to wear a seat belt. I know people who have wore seat belts and died....
