Escort Slugger vs. Mossberg 500

While sitting around the house during the covid lockdown I finally got a chance to compare my 500 with the Escort Slugger which I bought last fall.

Overall they are very similar. Same dimensions, same 18" barrel length. Similar cylinder bore slug barrels. Both have plastic furniture though the 500 originally had wood and was replaced with a Maverick 88 stock/forearm. The Escort's stock is thicker and a bit heavier. The Escort is listed @ 6.4 lbs, the 500 @ 6.25. Both have aluminum receivers and both utilize two rail slide mechanisms. Both hold 5 in the tube. While I've not shot them side by side they both shoot the same. Handling, recoil is the same as configured. The 500 may have a little better recoil pad but it's hardly noticeable.

As you can see they are set up the same...sling, shell cards on both the receiver and stock.

I had to cut down the fore stock to clear the shell card on the receiver, makes it look funky but doesn't hurt function.

The controls are different. The Escort has the slide release in front of the trigger, the 500 behind. Safety on the Escort is a cross bolt button behind the trigger, on the 500 it is a sliding button on top of the receiver. My understanding is that the Escort is based on the Remington 870 design. Internals do look very similar to my 870 Wingmaster

I bought the Escort new last fall (2021) for $136 OTD last fall. I paid $20 for the 500 at a police auction back in the 80s. I refurbished the 500 with new stocks and barrel and painted the receiver with baked on grill paint about 10 year ago.

I bought the Escort to replace the 500 as my truck gun and restore the 500 to use more for hunting.

How well this Turkish Escort will hold up is anyone's guess. I don't really plan on getting into an extended running gun battle with it so it really just needs to go bang when I pull the trigger. It doesn't really need to last for thousands of rounds. I've had my 500 for 35 years and probably don't have much more than 200 rounds through it so I expect the Escort will do the job it's intended for. So far I've put 27 rounds through it, 5 slugs, 5 buckshot and 15 birdshot and a couple 3" magnum turkey rounds. I will not be shooting 3" magnums through it ever again. ;)

Being close in design to the 870 led me to believe that an 870 mag tube extension might fit. I tried one and the threads are different. Some of the Turkish semi autos can use Franchi, Benneli extensions made by Choate. I assume the Turks use the same tubes on the pump guns but I've not been able to confirm online and it's not worth $50 to find out. A +2 mag extension would be kind of cool, though probably never needed.

Decided to go cheap with the side saddle shell cards. Got these 4 for $24 on Amazon.

It's just hard to argue with a price like that.

Turkey is gaining some traction with solid, reliable and affordable firearms. My buddy from work who is a serious gun-guy speaks very highly of Canik. So I would not doubt the Escort to be a solid performer.

I kind of miss my shotguns so I'll have to vicariously enjoy them through you :D

Well, I'm heading up to the new house tomorrow for a couple days. Will be taking the Escort and the Taurus G2c up with me to run on my range. I've run the Slugger before, haven't shot the Taurus yet. Will also be taking the TX22 to play with.

It is a good system if you invest the time in to learning how to use them. I have an older mag carrier that I have dedicated to carrying cards that are loaded in.

A good shotgun is not expensive to make. And remember - the Springfield XD is originally a Turkish gun....

$20 for the Mossberg...so much win!

Actually the XD was originally the HS2000 which is/was a Croatian military handgun. Springfield bought the import rights and changed the name to the XD. The HS2000 is still sold in other parts of the world. SA has taken the XD to new design levels but they are still made in Croatia.

A story about the 500. I originally cut the barrel down on it. Eventually I bought a used slug barrel off of ebay (as seen in the photo) My son was invited to go deer hunting on a buddy's farm which was in the shotgun zone part of the state (Southern Michigan) so he borrowed my 500. It had the wood stocks on it as shown in the photo. His buddies razzed him about the "old school" shotgun. We don't hunt in the shotgun zone so that's all I had. They all had modern scoped, rifled barrel slug guns with camo synthetic furniture specifically set up to hunt. At dusk a 4 pt buck came out in the corn field 130 yards away. Something spooked it and as it wheeled around to run my son touched off a shot and hit it in the back of the head. They didn't razz him after that. But after that I changed out the wood stock for plastic and repainted the gun and barrel with bake on engine paint.

And just an aside....
Some years later I was riding my bike around the neighborhood and came across a garage sale. Leaning against the back wall of the garage was Mossberg 500 with a long barrel and wood stocks. The barrel was pretty rusted and pitted, having obviously been put away wet. I talked the guy down to $70 bucks and bought it. I swapped the barrel with the cut down one I took off my original 500 and gave the gun to my son. l cleaned up the rusted barrel with steel wool and cut it down for another project.
