Roll your own.

So While I have been away for a minute or two, I started taking my hobbies and working them in ways that I have known I could do and have neer taken the steps.

I assembled a few firearms from parts. Yes P80 G H O S T guns. Please note I am not a gunsmith I do not portray myself as one, I do not even play one on tv or in the back yard while thinking about things while mowing the grass. Yes I do a lot of thinking when Mowing the lawn and the only thing bad happening was I mowed the neibors shared patch of lawn about and inch lower than he does when he bothers to mow it.

I have in the past even assembled some of the spooky AR's... I even have done a P320 this year (yes I folded up the flats and assembled the Fire control unit). I have just purchased a 1911 frame and slide. I know this is going to take a good long time to work on. Hand fitting parts and making tolerances is not for the meek.

This fall I have truely fallen to the dark side. Give a man time and tools and things will happen.

I bought a tax stamp and built my first form 1 suppressor. A .22 caliber can in stainless steel and Titanium. (Shiny)

To put it bluntly, harder to do than a Glock P80 easyer than the Sig P320. It also puts a lot more smiles on your face.

I know paying a tax stamp to own a silencer/suppressor is a controversial thing and that many people shy away from them because it puts you on a "List" or something. Well if you are not on a list yet how do you really know if you are alive. (In my opinion.)

Does it work. In a few short words, yes, very well in fact. Will I do it again for other calibers? Yes and no. Yes for .22 calibers, no for pistol calber designs that require a nelson device or Booster. Rifle can is in the design phase right now in looking at other designs and what have ya.

The wait time for Form 1 suppressors has historically been shorter than the form 4 (form 4 is buy from a dealer, Form 1 is build it yourself.) My wait was 28 days from filing and sending my rich uncle $200.00. so part of the reason was the much shorter wait. Right now form 4's are taking 8-10 months.

So feel free to ask away I will try and answer to the best of my knowledge, if not I can point you to resources for getting your DIY itch scratched.

Oh neat!

Are there any sites dedicated to this sort of project, or is it all "Start with Hiram Maxim's patents and work your way forward"?

There are many places albiet hidden in plain site out there.

In the ar15 boards under the Amory boards there are a few, if you google how to file an atf form1 for a suppressor are good places to start. You can also search silencer student on youtube (He tests many designs and has a calibrated DB meter he uses to test the different designs). There are many step by step vids for the forms and I would watch them all until you are sure what you need to do.

There is a lot of great information out there. No real one place anymore. One of the best forums for form one building was shutdown after 8years. all that data was lost. The community is trying to recover but it is difficult as everyone raced to get something up but it scattered most of the user base.

Side note, Building your own silencer is not hard at all. If you invest in good quality components you can get as good or even better results than over the counter purchases. My DIY suppressor is hard to tell the difference between my commercial can.

So you can save money, and get a very good performing suppressor with a little effort and studying.
