Group survival reading suggestion

Long before the Hollywood movie on the Bielski brothers came out, I read the book.
The things described in the book were so harsh that I had to put it down. Then I read it and re-read it multiple times. I will tell you up front that I believe, given time, either the Germans or the Soviets would have exterminated this band of over 1000 survivors living under primitive conditions.
The lessons are derived from thinking about the challenges and how they were met:
1. how could take people from all ages/sexes/educational levels/skills/health conditions and meld them into a survival unit?
2. what leadership skills and organization of leadership was needed for a large group to survive?
3. how would you accommodate old people and pre-schoolers and what could they contribute?
