Survival and Emergency Preparedness

Saw this on the Sensible Prepper channel and thought I’d pass it along.

I bought one of those 12ga shell alarms thingies back in 80s. Played with it but never used it. Just an FYI, you can use a 12 ga shell as a primer fired alarm as well without having to buy a separate accessory. I simply replaced the primer in a fired 12 ga shell and then filled the shell up with flour or baby powder. Makes a cloud of smoke when fired. Or you can use a 12 ga flare for night use. It will pop and light up but won't go anywhere without a barrel. It is a fire hazard however.

The flour/baby powder thing is a good idea. Easy and inexpensive.

I've also made my own flashbang shells by using aluminum or magnesium powder/filings Sometimes it would light, sometimes not. The nice thing about 12 ga shells is that you can put just about anything in them and since you are not putting them in the chamber of anything you don't need to resize the brass. Just punch the old primer out and press in a new one. If course after one shot the plastic blows out but if you wrap the outside in duct tape it will generally last more than once.

I am urban, in a house. Because of the distances between homes, the existence of objects of potential concealment (cars/trees/other buildings like garages) perimeter alarms would be of minimal assistance.

Using inexperienced, otherwise useless people in a survival situation as look outs (human tripwires) is probably the best option.

I have about 10 battery operated motion lights that could be deployed easily and moved around. The solar units are and would be less mobile.

Other options include the old-fashioned trip wire/trip wire with cans. I have dedicated rolls of dark and cameo wire for this purpose.

You could also construct tripwire traps so long as you advise other people in your group.

I have a trip wire siren alarm. When my dad had his stroke he was confined to bed or reclining chair but kept trying to get out them without help. We bought a little alarm that clipped to the side of the bed/chair with a string that clipped to him. If he tried to get out of the bed it would pull a pin out of the device and set off the alarm. After we moved him into a nursing home I took the alarm. It's pretty loud and was pretty cheap. Regular "personal alarms" typically run from $15-30+. I bought this cheap one and then added a sting with clips on either end.

Good idea. I happen to have three units which can be hooked up to trip wires. I hadn't thought of having one for an invalid. Now I do.
