Survival and Emergency Preparedness

Been up at the property all week and just got home. Turkey season opened on Friday so I hunted a few days. Temps were in the 70s the last couple days and the bugs came out in force. It was uncomfortable hunting in warm weather with swarming gnats and mosquitoes.

I had some of the 22 ammo I tested the pistols with me and my Ar7 rifle under the back seat of my truck. I decided to get a jump on testing some out of rifle barrels since I had the Ar7 handy. It has a 16" bbl.

So at lunch on Saturday I took out the crony and tested them . 7 were HV 40 gr solids, 5 were 36 gr HVHPs. 2 were standard velocity solids.

Test was a average of 5 shots @ 10 feet. Temp was 70 F.

The 40 gr "high velocity" averaged 1156 FPS with the highest being Remington thunderbolt @ 1208. The 40s averaged 1150 out of the 10" but it was 40F colder when I shot them. Only a difference of 6 FPS.

The 36gr "high velocity" averaged 1199 with the highest being Federal bulk packed @ 1241. 36s averaged 1100 out of the 10". So that's a gain of 99 FPS in 6".

The standard velocity averaged 1060, highest being Aguila Eagle target @ 1086. The other one was CCI Standard @ 1032.

I also ran some Stingers through it. They averaged 1482 the highest being 1496, the lowest 1460. That's in contrast to the 1340 they averaged out of the 10" barrel. So I gained 142 FPS in 6".

I have rifles in 22lr with 16, 18, 19, 20, 24, and one with a 26" bbl. I'm going back to the cabin on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I'll try and bring them and test them.

I agree. Have you had a chance to chrony any rounds out of the LCP II .22lr?

No, but my God daughter's husband is coming up to the property in a few weeks, I'll have him bring his LCP 22 and we'll test it.

Thanks, that would be interesting to see. We finally shot the one we have last Monday. It did well, though we didn't shoot it as much as I'd like. Couple of failures to fire but each looked like it had a good primer strike so I'm chalking it up to ammo rather than the pistol. Only have the one magazine so I'm debating on whether or not to get a couple more.

Thank you. That AL 317 should be a fairly close ballpark to the velocities you'd expect from an LCP II .22lr.

The 317 should be pretty close to what I'll get out of my shorty MKII as well. I always liked the velocitors

In last 12-14 months I've fired 14 boxes (700 rounds) of CCI Velocitor through various handguns and rifles and so far I've had exactly ZERO failure to fire. All were fired through "standard" specification, relatively clean and high quality firearms and in case of auto loading firearms every round fed from the magazine with no feed or extraction issues. Only two things I found a little negative is the velocity variance...high and low can vary quite a lot and accuracy is not the best in some guns.

The CCI Minimag is my favorite 22 lr ammo. In particular I like the 40gr solids but the 36gr hp is great too. Couple years ago we fired 2,000+ rounds of 40gr solid Minimag through couple of 22lr rifles in one afternoon and we only had one dud round. I also find Minimags to be very accurate in most 22lr firearms. I have noticed that 36ge hp version is easier to find than the 40 gr solid.
