Survival and Emergency Preparedness

Sootch uses baking soda in the video to clean the black soot off the cup. A simpler thing is simply dirt. That's what I do when I've been camping. The dirt is abrasive, it's everywhere, it's free and it works great to get all the black soot of of cups, pans etc.

Overall, a good video.
Here are my comments:
1. knives/saws/axes/tools. I deliberately purchased and restored old fashioned, non electric, non battery driven tools. They are not for barter. They are for rental in exchange for services. I have many restored knives.
2. he mentioned zip lock bags. I use them for everything from protecting usb keys, protecting watches, protecting tools. So i have a case of varying size ziplock bags.
3. I have a pile of old fashioned plastic pint bottles. It is cheaper to buy the rotgut by the 1.5 liter bottle, fill the smaller bottles and sell the large bottle for storing water.
4. Wine will go bad if stored in heat.
5. ammo is a poor choice to go hauling into an open market. It is heavy.
6. Guns are a poor choice. How much does an ak47 cost? for the price you pay now for an ak47, how many brand new $25 folder knives can you buy and store? So there I am in Peshawar, Pakistan. Guys are making all kinds of guns with the doors on the mud huts open. They are not going to take their guns and sell them in an open air market.

Bartering only works when you have ROL. Even with ROL you have to be concerned about home invasion and someone following you home and ambushing you.

Bartering exposes you to more physical risk then whatever you need is worth. Even today people are lured to a place to sell something they posted for sale on line only to be ripped off, assaulted or killed.

I have two issues with Scootch.

1. I'm never sure if he really likes the product he's promoting or he's promoting it because he's being paid to do so.

I've only watched about 10 of his videos and I have yet to see one in which he DIDN'T mention his Berkie(sp?) water filter or his life straw.

Do his kids really carry a trauma kit and (of course) a Life Straw every time they spend the night at a friends?

2. Isn't really a problem but I don't agree with his World View. And again, I'm not sure if what I'm seeing really IS his World View.

In almost every video of his I've seen the implication is that our economy will CEASE to be and the government will just END.

I read a book a year or two ago called "Survivors, A Novel Of The Coming Collapse" by James Wesley Rawls. The book postulates that America as a nation simply ceases to exist and Americans are basically on their own. I found it unbelievable. I read the book and threw it away.

That seems to be what Scootch thinks is coming and I don't so there comes a point in all of his videos where it becomes unbelievable to me.

So I watch for ideas but I'm not completely sold

I've often joked that Sootch has never met a gun he didn't like

It's my understanding that he gets sent the products for review. I'm not sure if he gets paid or not. The word is that a lot of reviewers like Iraqveteran88 gets paid a hefty sum and will like whatever is sent as long as the check clears. I'm sure a lot of them do it.

One of the reasons I like Tim at the MAC. He doesn't get paid and buys or is loaned the guns he reviews. One of the reasons he's free to give his honest opinion, good or bad, on a product.

My wife has a good saying of 'chew the meat and spit out the bones'. I like his reviews because they're usually in-depth. The commentary I can take or leave. That's with a lot of them.

In the woods/hiking/camping - you have all that and more in your backpack - which should never be away from you.

Driving - you have your Car Back Pack

Walking in city? - You don't need water/fire starting/etc., bandanna should be in your pocket.

Fanny packs are good for - extra magazine, pepper spray, multitool, medical/medicine like clotting/stop bleeding bandages.

Very much agree. I've talked about this one in the Top Gear section but I feel it's worth repeating, the Galco Escort fanny pack.


Fits up to a full sized pistol and spare mag. Had a front zippered pocket for wallet/phone etc and two side zippered pockets for smaller items. Discontinued but worth it if you can find one. Bought it for $18 and I've had it for 25 years.

Very handy whether it's in fashion or not.

I have a fanny pack that I set up for a Glock 26. I used a Glock holster to hold it.

With your set up; I'd suggest adding a quick pull tab on the velcro retention strap so that under stress you can grab it easily.

Nice set up.

Something like this could be modded to work. I can't tell from the site the size of it.
