TX-22 Competition mini review

Post by Ronin.45 »

A friend just picked up her TX today. I hadn't handled one before, but have seen glowing reviews from pretty much everyone. Unexpectedly, I found myself wanting a Taurus 😳. The grip fits my big hand very well. The trigger is surprisingly good. The features are all there with threaded barrel and optics plate.

I mounted a Holosun and got it sighted in for her. Immediately, I noticed odd grouping on the target at 10 yards. Walking down to check, I see about 4 out of 16 are keyholed and several inches from center. Somewhat inauspicious beginning. I'm using Federal bulk 36gr that she brought. I shoot another group to confirm with similar results. My plan to throw my suppressor on it is now cancelled.

I switch to Federal Automatch and proceed to dump 10 rounds into a 3/4" hole at 30'. No flyers or keyholing. I try Mini Mag 36gr that has identical specs to the Fed bulk. It runs flawlessly and prints a 1/2" ragged hole at 30'. Just to be thorough, I try a full mag with Aguila, Fed HV Match, and CCI SV. All shoot well and no keyholes.

On a whim, I grab my own box of Federal Bulk to test it. Different lot from a different year, but same results with tumbling, sloppy groups.

I really want to like this gun and seriously want to buy one for our indoor pistol matches and even rimfire 2Gun. However, I have 10-12,000rds of Federal bulk that my other guns love. If this can't eat it, it's not much good to me.

There's always a possibility that this particular gun is an anomaly. One I buy could love the bulk. I may take the gamble and hope for the best.

I agree that it could simply be an anomaly with that particular TX. If it had hey holed with the other brands I would have been concerned. But since they were shooting tight groups it's a fair assumption that this particular pistol simply didn't like that type of ammo. Do you know anyone else with a TX that you can try out before you purchase?

This is the only one in the group so far. Nothing to compare it to, It's very odd that it keyholed the one load. The Mini Mags have the exact same specs as the Fed bulk pack, 36gr CPHP at 1260fps. It's not an ammo issue since other guns like it just fine. The only explanation is tolerance stacking. That makes me think it could be gun specific.

Very well could be. Hard to know for sure with just the one sample. Mac has seem to have very good success with that Kel-Tec 22 he bought last year. Maybe that's an option?

The Keltec doesn't interest me much. I don't even need another rimfire pistol. I just liked the features of this one and figured it would work well at our matches. If I don't buy the TX, I probably won't buy anything.

Send it back, have the barrel swapped, see what happens.

If I buy one, and it exhibits the same problem, that would be my solution.

One just came up on a local forum. I contacted the guy within 5 mins and it was already gone. He bought it on impulse had no use for it, never even shot it. Dang it.
