Cool gun

Post by Mac66 »

So...a guy I know brought over a 9mm MP5 pistol to the woods house. The lower trigger pack is an AR parts/type and is 3D printed. Using a 3d printed lower with AR parts saves about $800. The upper is an actual HK and is considered the firearm. It also has a Super Safety which, as I have noted before is a legal reset trigger device which simulates full auto.

We took it out on my range and it did easy to control bursts on my metal plates. Pretty accurate 2-4 round bursts particularly with a suppressor attached.

Very fun to shoot. Did have few issues which was traced to one particular magazine. Original HK mags worked flawlessly.

I gotta get me a 3D printer

Is "full auto" a viable option for a home defense weapon?

The guy whose gun we shot asked me if I wanted a Super Safety type weapon. I had to think about it for a while and weigh the pros and cons.

Pros...
-Having a full auto rifle, carbine or PDW (braced pistol) would be handy to have if you lived out in the country (like in the woods). Having a full auto weapon might deter invaders. The gun we shot was very easy to put short bursts on multiple targets.
-Useful for fire suppression. It is useful to pin down invaders with fire in order to move, flank etc.
- Reset triggers, at least Super Safeties are relatively cheap. Heck, you can 3D print them. They can be fitted to any AR lower which works with any caliber upper to care to swap.
-Easy to install. Just swap out the safety lever on any AR or AR parts compatible lower.

Cons...
-Ammo cost You can burn up a lot of ammo playing with them
-legal issues. While reset triggers are currently legal and probabaly will remain so under the current administration that could change. I think the rule of thumb is "don't ask, don't tell". If things get so bad (zombies) you actually have to use it to defend yourself it probably won't matter.
-Having said that, I wouldn't use one for normal self/home defense.

Bottom line...

I may get one or two just to have on hand. It would be fun to put one on an AR 9mm braced pistol. Also a regular AR lower that could be swapped out with various other calibers like 5.56 and 22lr.

I am hoping that suppressors will be deregulated under this administration. Not holding my breath, but probably will eventually get into suppressors when we move up to the woods house later this year.

Bonus....
You can 3D print AR type lowers that fit Mac 11 uppers and use Glock mags. Add a pistol brace and you have a pretty good PDW pistol. Add a Super Safety to it and you can waste a lot of ammo.

I've been lucky enough to shoot a bunch of full auto over the years. The conclusion I've come to is that it's mostly a novelty.
A skilled shooter can put accurate semi-auto shots on target almost as fast with much more controllability.
Suppressive fire may be effective if you're just spraying wildly in the jungle, but controlled shots can also keep someone's head down behind a wall or something.
If I'm in a defensive situation involving rifles and suppressive fire, I want my magazine to last as long as possible. Blowing my whole load in a few bursts takes me out of the fight.

I agree but in a war, suppressive fire is good if you have an unlimited supply of ammo and magazines. Watch some of the Ukraine videos when they are clearing trenches. It's all recon by fire, shoot and scoot.
