Humanitarian Daily Rations (MREs)

Post by Mac66 »

Just received my HDR order from Amazon

These are vegetarian rations 2200 cals a day
They are packed in a salmon colored heavy plastic sealed pack much like military MREs. Inside is another clear plastic sealed bag. They are marked 1-5, 2 of each.

The one I opened was marked 4* on the package.

Meal 4 is as follows:
Contents
-entree, peas in tomato sauce 241g, 280 cal
-entree, rice w/ vegetables 241 g 350 cal
-tortillas/2 2.29 oz 220 cal
-oatmeal cookie, 2.2 oz 240 cal
-shortbread cookie,2.2 oz 300 cal
-peanut butter 1 oz 160 cal
-Strawberry jam 1 oz 60 cal
-frosted toaster pastry, brown sugar 3.39 oz 410 (pop tarts)
-sugar 2
-black pepper 1
-salt 1
-crushed red pepper 1
-wet nap 1
-paper napkin 1
-spoon 1
-matches 1 pack

Total calories 2,200

Note: neither of the entrees are in a box like in MREs and they are not marked on the package. They do have a loose card as to what they are and nutrition but if you don't keep the card with them you won't know what they are.

I haven't opened or tasted any of the food yet.

*There are apparently 3 different variations for each meal though they are not marked on any of the package. Conceivably one could get different entrees in each of the same numbered meals. Meal #4 includes....
Option 1: Beans with Potatoes and Brown and Wild Rice with Lentils
Option 2: Rice and Vegetables in Sauce and Peas in Tomato Sauce
Option 3: Pasta in Tomato Sauce and Yellow Rice

While I found some online reviews of #4 option 2, none had tortillas in them only crackers.

Our box of food arrived. Haven't sampled any yet, but for the price it will make a nice addition to our food supplies.

interesting to see how it tastes...

I always sample ( and give some to the family ) to test out before buying in bulk. I know when the shtf it won't matter, but we still rotate a bunch of food storage during power outage times each storms/winter or so.

HDRs-peas, tomato sauce, tortillas

Post by Mac66 »

I tasted the peas in tomato sauce and the tortillas today.

The "peas" weren't peas they were beans, i.e, navy beans. It was edible cold but pretty good when warned up and put on the tortillas. The tortillas were flavorful but kind of fell apart when used.

I intended to eat the rice/veggies on the tortillas but grabbed the wrong package

When I was in florida I had the shortbread cookie and oatmeal cookie with my afternoon coffee on successive days. They were pretty good.

Re: HDRs: Pop Tarts

Post by Mac66 »

Tried the pop tarts with my coffee this morning. They come in an outer foil package with an inner foil package marked Pop Tarts on it. Brown sugar/cinnamon, no frosting. Didn't look very appetizing.

Can't remember the last time I had pop tarts. Right out of the package they tasted ok. Right out of the toaster they crumbled apart in my hands.

I only ate half of one, having been on my fast they were way too sweet for me.

Man - Pop Tarts are a WEEKLY survival food around here.

Can't imagine an SHTF or Zombie Apocalypse without them...
