Re: Society breakdown guns

Communications; One of the things that surprised me in the books is that none of the survival group were ham operators. They didn't even have a receiver that picked up ham radio. It's pretty easy to get a Technician license these days. It would be worth while to play around with ham radio. Not to me...

Re: Society breakdown guns

Other technology....In the books they converted their ARs to full auto using auto sears, full break down in society so no more laws. - Not sure whether you would need full auto or it would be just a waste of valuable ammo. On the other hand, the bad guys would probably go there so having the ability...

Re: Society breakdown guns

Pistols... I don't think you can go wrong with a Glock in 9mm. Maybe a Glock 22 with 9mm conversion barrel, just because it's a bit more versatile and that's what I have. Everybody in the group gets a Glock for commonality of ammo, parts and mags. Pistol 2- probably a 22 like a TX22 or Keltec P17 bo...

Society breakdown guns

Let's play a game.... The books I've recently read, Patriots and Expatriots (read my reviews in the Coffeehouse forum) revolve around an economic meltdown in the US and around the world. This causes goods and services to shut down, widespread civil unrest and a compete break down of society. Gangs o...

Re: watches

bd makes a good point considering how few people wear watches these days and rely on cell phones. I've had a number of watches over the years including Ironmans and other digital watches (I have a drawer full of them) but the one I always come back to and my EDC is the one my wife gave me 30 or 40 y...

Re: Another Book: Expatriots

It was written around 2013 but its based on the same events that were in his first book Patriots in the mid '90s. So the guns are the same.

I'd like to see a modern version with upgraded weapons and technology.

Book: The Good Shepard aka Greyhound

This was the book the movie Greyhound with Tom Hanks was based on. Actually I think they went back and renamed the book Greyhound after the movie came out. Written by C.S. Forrester in 1955 it is about an American Destroyer Escort captain in charge of escorting a convoy of ships across the Atlantic ...

Meshtastic encrypted comms

My son has been playing with this recently and thinks it has some value for emergency comms. Basically it is a circuit board with an antenna that when plugged into your cell phone allows you to have encrypted text comms over the air. The encryption is supposed to be very good and can be set up in gr...

Another Book: Expatriots

Another book by James Wesley Rawles continuing the story of the cannibal, commie looters. Though set during the same economic collapse as The Patriots, this book takes place mostly in Australia and central Florida. Apparently Malaysia and Indonesia have turned radical Muslim and embedded sleeper cel...

Re: Spring is coming early

I drove across Detroit from the north east burbs to the western burbs on Friday morning. Heavy snow, snow and slush covered expressways. Two tracks all the way. I was pretty much in 4 wheel drive the whole way. Headed home in the afternoon and most of the roads had been salted, wet but clear. I drag...
