22 caliber ballistics

Post by Mac66 »

Was up at my property this week running some 44 and 357 mag loads through the chronograph. When I was done I took out my new P17 and shot some 22 lr through it.

I only had CCI Blazers and Armscor 37gr HV with me. The Blazers are 40 gr. The P17 has a 3.93" bbl.

I was surprised that the Blazers were 50 fps faster than the "high velocity" Armscor bullets. Below is an average of 10 shots at 10 feet

Blazers 990
Armscor 950

I will be going back up to my property next week and will takes some other 22 pistols and loads to test just for fun. I have probably a dozen makes and types of 22 ammo laying around and 3 or 4 other 22 pistols with various length barrels. I will record the results here. This will be a work in progress

Pistols & bbl lengths

Kel Tec P17 3.93" 990 950

Ruger Mk1 6"

Ruger Single 6 5.5"

Charter Arms Explorer II (Ar7 pistol) 4" & 10" bbl

Brownell BRN 22 4" & 10" bbls (Ruger Charger clone)

Yeah, I know it's all been done before...but not by me and not with my guns. ;)

And BTW, I just went through my 22 ammo and have 13 different 22lr loads to test.

I'm now debating whether to do rifles as well. I have rifles with bbls from 16" up to 24".

My nephew came up to the property to do some shooting. He's bored sitting at home while off from work. He brought some stingers and we shot them through the P17 and a 1022.

They were 1160 fps out of the p17 and 1506 out of the 10.22. Didn't get a chance to try them in anything else, limited quantity.

Oh, and we practiced social distancing.

Spent some time today running different 22s through my p17 and 4 other guns. Here at the highlights.

I ran 14 different loads through 5 different pistols. Numbers represent an average of 5 shots per load.

The second highest was Winchester 555 bulk packed 36 gr HV HP at an average of 1060 fps out of the p17 and 1165 out of a Ruger 6" mk 1.

The lowest was PMC 40 gr HV at 880 fps in the p17. It wasn't the lowest in the mk1 however. That was UMC 40 gr high speed @ 937.

Highest in everything were CCI Stingers @ 1160 out of the p17, 1267 out of the mk1 and 1340 out of to 10" ar7 pistol.

Only three loads exceeded 1000 fps in the p17. They were the stingers, the Winchester 555s and federal 36 gr hvhp bulk pack @1014 fps.

Only three loads were less than 1000 fps in the 6" mk1. They were the UMC, CCI standard and aguila 40 gr golden eagle target loads @ 960 fps.

On average velocities were 95 fps different between the 3.93" p17 and the 6" mk1.

More info...

Here are the numbers from highest velocities to lowest in my P17/3.93" bbl

Average of 5 shots @ 10 feet. Temp was 38 F.

1. CCI Stinger 32 gr HP 1160
2. Win 555 36 HP 1060
3. Fed bulk pack 36 hvhp 1014
4. Fed auto match 40 998
5. CCI Blazer 40 990
6. Armscor 36 hvhp 950
7. Win 333 36 hvhp 948
8. Rem golden 36 hp 947
9. Win Super X 40 928
10. Rem Thunderbolt 40 925
11. Rem Golden 40 897
12. Aguila Golden Eagle 40 887
13.UMC High Speed 40 882
14. PMC HV 40 880
15. CCI Standard 40 Vel 874

Notes:

-Unless otherwise noted, the 40 gr bullets are solid points 36 gr were hollow points.

-Most of the ammo I've had for a long time. Some of the ammo was quite old and obtained before the Obama era. I don't even remember when/where I got the UMC 40 gr or Aguila Golden Eagle target ammo.

-Shot two versions of Rem Golden Bullets. 40 gr. solids and 36 gr. HPs. The 40 gr. was quite old

-I assumed the Win 555 and 333 were the same ammo just bulk packed into 555 round and 333 round boxes. They surprised me me in that they turned out to have quite different velocities.

-CCI Blazer is the same as CCI Mini Mags. They are made on the same line at the same time. Mini Mags are inspected more frequently for quality control, hence the difference in price.

-PMC (Pan Metal Co.) is Korean ammo obtained before Obama.

-The CCI Blazer ammo was obtained before Obama, re-election.

-While I wouldn't choose to carry/use a 22 pistol for self defense I'm thinking the CCI Stingers would be the best thing to carry. Very few people could withstand 16 rapid shots out of a P17.

-The P17 was 100% reliable during the test. I've now got about 1000 rounds through it. I am impressed. I pick up my second one from Sportsmans Warehouse when I get notified. It was supposed to be on on March 31.

I'll be adding data from other pistols, i.e Ruger Mk 1 6" bbl, Charter Arms Ar7 pistol w/6 &10" bbls, and Ruger Single 6 w/5.5" bbl as I compile it.

Here's an updated chart

Image

Notes:
-The Ar7 is technically a Charter Arms Explorer II pistol based on the Ar7. It came with a 6 & 8" bbl but I can't find the 8" bbl. I cut down and threaded an Ar7 bbl to 10" and used that instead. If/when I find the 8" bbl I'll run some rounds through it.

-Other than the P17 which is listed highest to lowest, the other gun's velocities are listed as they appear. There was some deviation in velocities.

-The Win 555 ammo was supplied by my nephew and was tested in my P17 on Tuesday. He went home taking his ammo with him. The rest of the guns were tested on Wed thus the NA notation.

A man cannot call himself peaceful if he is not capable of violence. If he's not capable of violence he isn't peaceful, he is harmless. There is a distinct difference.

Fate whispers to the warrior "You cannot weather this storm". The warrior replies, "I am the storm".
