So - disclosure; I have shot all my life, and enjoy firearms. I target shoot, and occasionally hunt, or trap shoot. I maintain all you NEED for a basic SHTF is 100rds of pistol ammo and a box of 12g buck.

That said - on New Years (Girl was working) I cleaned up the gun closet and re-organized. Some interesting findings!

#1 I have about 1k round s of premium 9mm. This includes ~550 of FMJ 124g NATO (I know, not that premium, but still a .Mil round), and an assortment of HST, Speer GoldDot, Hornady, etc. One box is waterproof SOCCOM ammo! The HST is my defense round of choice
#2 I have about another 1k rounds of cheap fmj 115g 9mm; White Box, Federal, etc.
** I have five 9mm Pistols

#3 I have about 3k rounds of .22lr! This happened because of my own aversion to shooting .22 during the .22 drought. This includes ~ 1k of CCI Minimags in FMJ and HP. Also includes a little smattering of sub-sonic, high velocities, varmint/rodent rounds, and shot shell!(great for smaller Buffo Toads)
** I have both a .22 rifle, and now a .22 pistol - plus a survival .22 (CCI's are for that)

I have about 2k rounds of 7.62x39. This includes a few premium rounds, some soft points, some steel core, and even a few tracers.
**Ak is my SHTF Black Rifle

#4 I have maybe 100 rounds of assorted HD ammo: 40 or so Mil buckshot, low-recoil buck and slugs, flight control, and about 60 Nobel Blue Box Mini-shells, Buckshot, and Multi buck-slug rounds

#5 I have another 100 rounds of general cheap buck and slug, maybe 25 high powered buck and slug (including Brenekke knockout - the Red-Neck RPG), and another 80-100 rounds of #6, Turkey rounds, etc.
** I have 2 Mossberg 12g shotguns, one HD and one hunting. Hunting gun has f\Field and Turkey barrels.

#6 I have an assortment of 500rds of .45, maybe 300 .40, another 100 .357 mag, 150 .38, and 80 or so 30-06
** And something to shoot them in!

All in all, I am fairly well stocked - and then some, in my opinion for any situation that could occur. Or just a good day at the range!

I am a pretty avid competition shooter so I go through more ammo than most. I don't really stock anything for SHTF. I'll just use what's already on hand.
Currently I'm a little low on most things.
7500rds 9mm fmj
200rds 9mm SD ammo
6500rds 22lr
500rds 12ga

I don't go through the SD ammo very quickly. The fmj is always rotating.
I don't even have a 12ga currently so that ammo should last me a while.

Yeah...I notice that I buy SD ammo more often than I shoot it.

Bob, do you have a picture of your 59mm pistol. Never seen one. Is it a semi or revolver? What barrel length and weight?
Can't wait to see it.

I have 7-8,000 rounds of 7.62x39 and about 4-5,000 rounds of 223/556 ammo on hand

Well over 30,000 rounds of various 22 LR

About 10 cases of 9mm of various kinds, mostly ball in addition to maybe a couple hundred rounds of SD ammo.

A case of 45 acp ball. With casings, bullets & primer to make a couple thousand more

Probably a couple hundred loaded-357 mag & 44 mags with casings, bullets & primers to make another thousand or so each. I also have a couple thousand 38 spl casings for reloading.

Couple cases of mil surp 308/7.62x51 plus 4-5 boxes of hunting ammo, plus reloading supplies to make more.

Down to a case and a half of 40 cal plus maybe 150 round of SD ammo

Various boxes of hunting ammo in 375 Win, 30-30, 35 Rem, 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster.

Half a case of 30 carbine ball ammo and 250 rounds soft point 30 carbine SD ammo.

Various boxes of 32 acp & 380.

500 rounds of 12 ga buckshot and 200-300 rounds of slugs and birdshot. I also have a couple thousand empty 12 ga shell, bags of shot and primers to reload 12 ga. Probably 100-200 rounds of 20 ga birdshot on hand and some .410.

Just added some 380 and more 22 to the supplies. Also, cleaning brass and preparing to reload more 9mm.

I look at it this way buy a box of what calibers you need every friday. 9 mm .45 acp, 5.56, 7.62, 12 ga. and 2-3 of .22 LR.

stick to this for 2-3 years and you will be set for a very long time as long as you replenish what you use.

I hear people belly aching about ammo prices and how they can not afford to have huge piles of ammo laying around. Well if you buy a little at a time all the time it takes the sting out of buying it. Even if you only Buy a box every other week for certain calibers. It will start to add up.
