David wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2020 11:32 am Well, folks have different opinions on things based upon their experiences. I can't speak for all Police departments, but every one I'm familiar with has night sights on their pistols. And having taken and taught night and dim light courses I can say they are extremely useful. I personally would not advocate for black on black when better options are available. As for shooting high with fiber optics or white dots, well, again they're entitled to their opinion and I would have to respectfully disagree with their assessment.

I think that they were carrying full sized custom Glocks with the added jazz may speak volumes.
I tend to agree with you. Night sights are for low light not no light. They help you find your sights against a dark or dimly lit background/target. FOs and white dots help as well. I think black on black sights are generally better for target shooting. Maybe that was their point, since this wasn't a tactical course.

On the other hand why bring up night sights for carry guns? You know what they say about opinions.

In my experience, shooting low/no light matches for 16 odd years, tritium is of nominal use. In perfect low light conditions it glows bright and helps in getting a good sight picture. In slightly more light it's not bright enough to see. In slightly less light it's too dark to see the target anyway and you need a flashlight which washes out the tritium. There's a narrow range of light where they are great.
As for sight dots or fiber optics, they make the front sight easier to see in almost all conditions. Every competition shooter in the world would disagree about them making you shoot high.
This sounds like people who don't know much about shooting becoming instructors because their resume looks good.

I can say that I love the orange on the front of my Trijicon HD or Ameriglo sights or the green on my Sig Xray sights. They really catch my eye. The TFO sights on my G22 also catch my eye with any type of light causing the green to pop out nicely.

I've never used night sights. I do have a couple pistols with fiber optic sights and most of the rest have white dots or a brightly colored front sight. In 47 years of carrying a gun I've never had to shoot anything or anybody at night.

I recently watched a vid that reminded me of some basics. Yep - good stuff. Can't get too much of it.

In a martial arts class I attend an instructor said B"Bob - if you are bored with this you can go do something else..."

My reply: Nope - never get tired of fundamentals.

If you decide to take a walk on the wild side, I really recommend the TFO or TFX sights. On my LC9 and LC9s they really drew your eye. When I had them installed I asked the guy what he thought of TFO sights, he smiled and pulled out his LC9s with the same sights. Only downfall on the LC9 line is the sights aren’t easy to install. Although I’ve installed many sights on many pistols I left this one to an armorer.

If you ever get a chance to participate in a night shooting competition, you need to do it. If you have good basic fundamentals, it makes the shooting at night easier, not easy. My Glocks all have orange Trijicon HD sights on them. I like it because I can pick up the front sight quickly. What I realized at the night matches, you don't see the orange. With the light turned on, you don't even see the glowing tritium. All you see is the blade of the front sight.

I realized that I like my lower power light (PL Mini) more than my 1,500 lumen light when working in close. The larger light was nice when we were shooting at 40 yard targets because it lit them up well. The 400 lum light was much nicer in close because I didn't blind myself as much. The match allowed us to switch from light to light between stages so you could try different setups.

Both lights worked well and paying for good quality light is a must. A few guys had bought cheap lights, one quit after the first shot, another couldn't get his light to stop strobing, a third, his light came flying off his gun midway through the second stage when the light mount broke.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I learned how to switch my 1,500/1,200 lum Olight WMl to low settings on the fly. So, you really can have the best of both worlds with one WML. You can have the high setting or the low setting just depending on what you situation calls for.

I agree that too much light isn't good in some situations. Light reflecting can really effect night vision in a bad way. The ability for you to change to a low setting is fantastic on your lights!

I think you have the Olight WML, which if you do, I believe most if not all their models can be changed from high to low settings.

Yep, I've got the PL-mini valkyrie. Nice light. How do you switch to a low mode?
