Loosing a good friend

Post by Bmyers »

Our Great Dane, Oreo, is 9 years old. two weeks ago she was diagnosed with renal failure. We changed her diet and prayed for the best, but her body is shutting down. If she makes it till tomorrow, we have made arrangements to have her put down. Can't let the old girl suffer any longer, she has stopped eating and drinking.

She has been one of the best dogs we have had. Every time we go through something like this I always say we will never get another dog. I'm going to miss her.

Very sorry to hear this. Pets really become part of the family. Consider the life you gave her.

It was a rough day yesterday. Vet came to the house and put her down. We took her out to the farm and the neighbor came with his backhoe and helped us bury her.

Our daughter has never been in our house when it doesn't have a dog in it. Right now the thought of getting another dog is something I don't want to do. Yet, the longest I have been without a a dog has been 6 months. So only time will tell.

Thanks for all the kind words.

We had a good day on Saturday. Took the family out for breakfast and then took the ladies shopping. We really enjoyed the day.

Although when we pulled up in the driveway, without thinking my wife told our daughter to make sure she let the dog out while she watered the plants. It took her minute to realize what she said.

I pointed out you can't expect to change overnight, the dog was a very active part of our life for the last 9 years, but just like every other dog, we will move on and be thankful for all the wonderful memories.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and thoughts.

Know what you mean... after the wife's cat of almost 20yrs had to be put down... for a while we'd come home and say "let the cat out of basement"

It takes a while to get out of the habits.

I'm not sure if we're going to be facing that soon or not. Both of our cats are rescues. The older one is around 13 now. We rescued her before her eyes were even open and had to bottle feed her for a month. She's a wonderful cat with an awesome personality. For several years she was overweight at about 18 lbs. In the last 6 months she's down to about half of that and goes through bouts of throwing up. Other than the weight loss and throwing up (which has lessened) she acts fine. Still loving, still 'Sassy'. But it makes us wonder if she's heading down that road or if it's just something she's going through and may still have many years?

But it will suck when that day comes.

Our old cat ( yes, same here a rescue that wife bottle fed ) went thru a bout of throwing up and weight loss at the age of about 13....
turned out after tests, it was the food.
She could no longer handle dry food and we had to switch over to wet which solved the issue. ( after trying 10 diff ones till we found one she would eat )

Turned out we mixed kitten and normal wet canned food of same type.

That's interesting. Last week I started giving her a small can of wet food every other day. And she very much enjoys that! Still feed her the regular dry food and I see her eating it. This routine seems to have helped somewhat. And the dry food is suppose to be a good one with no grains and has probiotics and such.
