Does anyone have the 'Avergae price of a box of"from 2000 to 2020?
I'd love to see that.
9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
Re: 9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
An average price over that long a period would be pretty useless information as it would include the spikes every few years plus inflation to throw it off. The non-panic price in 2000 for 9mm was about $4 a box. In early 2020 it was about $8. These are not estimates, these are actually what I paid for ammo in these years. Blazer Aluminum mostly in the early 2000s and Blazer Brass/Federal Aluminum the last few years. In fact, when the market was really saturated in 2018-19 it was down to $7 a box for a while before stabilizing around $8.
Of course, this is buying by the case which is the only way shooters buy ammo.
Re: 9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
I will echo Ronin. In the Bush era a typical box of 9mm at WM was $4 give or take a few pennies. Under Obama, after that ammo panic, the price settled in at around $8 for the typical box of 9mm FMJ (brass not steel), again at WM. Up until the beginning of 2020 the typical price of a box of 50 FMJ at WM was between $8-$10 depending on the brand.
40 S&W was 'around' $13 to $14 per box and 45acp was $17ish. 357sig was fairly scarce and about 3X that of 9mm when you found it at WM.

I thought you were nuts when you posted that price.David wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 10:52 am Last year I predicted that things would return to normal around the second quarter of this year. That was probably an optimistic appraisal unfortunately. Hopefully later in the year? Gun sales were down in February compared with the previous months but still up compared with the previous February. We'll have to see what this month is like. Perhaps the market is reaching it's saturation point. While that won't have an immediate effect on ammo, it's an indicator that it's going in the right direction.
I feel comfortable enough with my inventory that I shot at last weeks Outlaw match with my son. And may shoot again at a CCW match at the end of May. Perhaps by that time we'll see a clearer picture.
But no, I'm not buying any ammo right now. I haven't bought any since around the summer of last year and that was 45acp because I had just picked up my USP 45 around that time so I wanted to get a small stash for it. And it was only slightly elevated in price at that time. So I haven't even looked at prices online or in a shop since last year. The private market in our area is still off the chart stupid. People are wanting 80 cents to a buck a round of 9mm FMJ. And folks are still trying to get twice what their Glock is worth. Is anyone buying? Well, not me.
Then I checked this site where I sometimes bought in bulk.

Yep, ammo has reached stupid levels and boldly jumped right over the line and kept running.

Well if bust follows boom; prices should crater at some point.

Re: 9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
And just to put all in prospective .... here's a box from the 70's at $6.67.. from a case I have
You can't fix stupid !
Re: 9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
I mean the average price for EACH year. It wouldn't be useless at all. You'd see/know what caused the spike (Obama elected, for example). I'm gonna find this.
Re: 9mm $35 for 50 - the new normal?
OK - here is something...
It looks like once it went up above .20 it never went below that again, so $10 a box would be a low/min amount. Saw a chart that went back to 2004.
And practically, < than .30 seems pretty rare. So $15 seems more reasonable expectation.
As always, you don't go back. I'm calling you will not see $10 9mm EVER again. $15 is decent, and $20 not unreasonable....We'll see.
