And that's the thing right there, Cody has literally gone all over the work with a $15 knife and survived.  Yeah, it was a scripted show, but he still was able to complete all the necessary tasks to make shelter, fire etc with that $15 knife.  

It simply works, and works well.  I've used those Bahco knives numerous times and given a bunch away.  No one yet has come back and said they suck.  And I can tell you first hand that they're scary sharp.

So, my girlfriend got me the Brothers of Bushcraft knife that i've been lusting over for over 2 years for Xmas. It's stout, nice spine, good blade shape, good balance. It's expensive, that's why i never bought it for myself.

Get the current iteration of the 499.  Cut off the top vertical retainer with a box cutter and you have a nearly ideal knife.  If you want to sharpen, go ahead.  Military knives are deliberately issued somewhat dull for their most common anticipated application.  It isn't a matter of Ontario being "cheap".
