When survival shows go wrong.
#11
If you're moving around too much, you're hurting your chances of being found. Having a STOP (sit, think, observe, plan) before you start running around. Otherwise you're getting more lost.

Time and place for everything.  If it's an emergency situation where the danger is imminent and you have no choice but to mover quickly that is one thing.  But quite often the turtle approach is going to save your life i.e. slow and methodical wins the race.  Being in a constant hurry, when unnecessary only increases the chances of a mechanical injury happening (like turning an ankle, falling etc) and blows through calories and hydration.

And like John stated, if it's a situation where you're lost or stranded it just makes it more difficult on SAR to find you.  Better to find an area in the immediate vicinity (if possible) where you are easily located and then concentrate on essentials.  And have a signal mirror and/or fire ready to go.  Or a flashlight with blinky functions like SOS, strobe or beacon to attract attention.
Governmental dependance makes for poor self reliance.

I've certainly noticed a difference between Les Stroud's shows and other survival shows. Les moves very methodically. The gears in his head never really stop turning so to speak while others seem to act on a whim.

My fondest Survivorman shows are the ones where he was in the mountains with the 2 horses. And, when he was in South America and got bad diarrhea. There was a lot of information put out in those 2 shows which he never said a word but by his actions. I see more reaction in this new shows rather than proaction.

On Alone, this got a lot of the first fall outs. You can see those who lasted on the show were those who were planning the next step and thinking of the long run. Having not just a plan A and B, but C, D and E forms from A and B. Learn from the shortcomings of A and consistently improve from there.

I just found out that Michael Hawke lives in Austin, Tx.. (where I live). I just messaged him on facebook. Maybe he will let Ruth take me camping Wink

Yeah, Joe Teti is a joke and Bear Grills is a show off. I found the letter that Cody Lundin wrote to Obama on his facebook page. it was pretty awesome

I feel like I'm always harsh on a lot of things. But when it comes to survival shows, I believe most of these guys could be a lot more real and practical rather than entertaining. But entertainment gets ratings. However, with most anything, you have those who take things seriously and those who show off for attention. It's those who can end up influencing folks and getting them hurt. I'm not trying to say in any way I am an expert myself. I try to be as humble as I can.

Which most of my threads and posts are for the greenhorn beginner. It wouldn't matter if I had the skills and knowledge of Mykel and Dave or Matt. I want to present myself in a humble professional manner that hopefully folks will respect and see that while bushcraft, self reliance, survival and preparedness is fun to an extent, it must also be taken seriously as you pay attention to what's going on in the world around you. There's a sensible mindset. And then there's the "mainstream" mindset.

I've found that in all actuality, the more seemingly boring the show is, the more valuable the knowledge is. I like Alone for showing the "average Joe" community. And, showing that the survival game is almost entirely mental toughness. Other than Alone, I'll watch shows on YouTube. That is to me where the gold is found so to speak on the subject. If you just geek up and dig into YouTube and the Internet you'll find the real deals as they'll stand out from the know it alls.
