I went to the Naval base in Va to visit my son and a young man there wanted his knife sharpened. This was the one time in my life I went somewhere without a DMT red ice pick serrated sharpener and a ceramic rod. The DMT ICE PICKS CAN SHARPEN ANY EDGE BTW, obviously...duhhh..

So I looked around and said..."son, you got a clean coffee mug you're not using??"

And I proceeded to put a razor edge on the kids Gerber Automatic Knife with the cup.

He was floor boarded.

Good, that means he learned something and can pass it on!   Smile

Dude..I mean this guy was on duty talking to everybody he knew about that! Well maybe it inspired him to learn more about edge making from that point.

Somebody said the other day that hand sharpening and honing is a dying art...I said

Nope. Been teaching it for over 30 years and doing it for 42!

Still got a Carbon 5 SRK that I can't seem to get quite right yet. I bought it off eBay for 40 bux and somebody managed to dull the horse monkey out of it!

I had an SRK and sold it, bad move on my part.  It's an awesome knife!

Glad the guy was excited about the method, that's a skill in the tool box.

Funny enough I was thinking about sharpening my little CRKT Squid yesterday and all my sharpening stuff is packed away so I was going to do it tonight but then I saw this thread and figured I'd try it... It worked great! I did notice a very small chip in the blade so I'll still have to work on it a bit, but less than five minutes with a coffee cup and it's considerably sharper!
