Quote:Per the 2017 FBI UCR Expanded Homicide Data Table 8:
In 2017 403 people were murdered using a rifle, this includes all rifles, from grandpa's old lever action or bolt action hunting rifle, to modern rifles like AK or AR variants. The FBI UCR Expanded Homicide Data Table 8 also notes that in 2017 1591 were murdered by some form of cutting instrument, such as knives, swords, boxcutters scissors etc. and that 696 were killed by personal weapons such as hands/feet/fists.
To put those numbers in perspective: the US population for 2017 was 325.7 million.
This gives us a rifle murder rate of 1.237 per 1000000 population and a hands/feet/fists murder rate of 2.137 per 1000000 population. Both of those are an exceedingly small amount.
The CDC, based on 2011 data, estimates that there are 3000 deaths a year from foodborne diseases. That gives a death from tainted food rate of 9.628 per 1000000 population based on 2011's US population of 311.6 million.
That means you are roughly 7.78 times more likely to die from tainted food than from being murdered by a rifle of any kind.
To further put this in perspective: A 2016 study published in the British Medical Journal by Johns Hopkins researchers shows that medical malpractice or error accounts for 250000 deaths a year in the US. Using the 2016 us population of 323.4 million, that equals an annual rate of 773.03 per 1000000 population.
That means you are 625 times more likely to die from medical malpractice than to be murdered by a rifle of any kind.

Lawyers first. Always lawyers.
And then when you consider that a lot of those gun deaths are by choice, and criminal on criminal crime...feeling pretty safe.
That said - Thank GOD we have the Government protecting us with all of the food laws & regs!!!!!!!!
