Interesting Fire Starting Method
#1
Video

This method is very labor intensive at first. But after you have the hearth board made you're good to go for a great many fires to come. I really like this way because if you are ever in a survival situation (without lighters or any other ignition source) this will save you time, calories, undue stress and fatigue.

That was bad-arse, long winded but bad-arse. Now if I can find wood around here that I can build one with. Looks like he's in NC.
Did you spot the pump shot gun over in front of the pack?

Lonnie and Connie are happy Alaskans. I'm impressed with most all their videos. I believe he keeps that shotgun for the occasional bear.

I tried this with cedar. It was kinda sorta a bad idea.... Too hard. I worked that wood for days. Ended up with a lot of fire wood and whoppy-jaw hearth boards. So I'm going to try again with either pine or birch.

Use cypress for both spindle and fire board make coals fast.

I have used the bow method with cypress as the hearth and Oak as a spindle. I also shaved some cypress bark/wood to push the ember into to start the small fire. Chipped fat-wood kindling also makes it easy or some crystallized pine sap. Of course that was 30+ years ago.

Very helpful! I have CP, so balance and coordination are a problem, that sure is easier than a regular bow drill, from the best I can see.

This will be great to try!

Thanks for posting!!
