I can't respond properly on the FERRO rod thread, I'm on an iPod so I'll bring this up here.
A BUNCH of the mag bars you find on ebay etc now simply don't work, using aluminum or some pot metal junk instead of lab grade magnesium.

Really simple test...shave off aluminum with old knife and compare shaving difficulty, hardness, burn time etc. it's a real eye opener. Cause out in the bush, when it has to work, it HAS TO WORK, or you freeze, dehydrate, and eventually starve if you didn't bring it with you.

Fire is the key.

Finding lab grade magnesium is a PITA. The Gallium source stuff works good, but ya can't just slough it off like I've seen in a few infomercials in YT!

I know the HFT mag bars get some bad press.  So far they've worked for me but I'd readily admit that it's probably a luck of the draw in the quality from batch to batch.  They are hard though and not the easiest to shave.  Seem to come off more in granules than actual shavings most of the time.  I have an actual Doan bar somewhere, I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison test.

I have a mag bar from Ali Express that I had linked in the Ferro Rod thread (but the link is no longer active).  It came on a wooden handle and was actually fantastic!  This is what it looks like, different vendor:

That was probably about the same price I paid last year.  And like I said, this one actually worked really well.  The magnesium shaved off very easy and it lit right up just fine.
