When , many yrs ago, when I carried a SW chief, I didn't even bother with extra rounds... it was a safer place then.

But did learn on a model 10 with speed loaders which worked well. All carried two extra. It all came down to practice on how well it worked

Right now all of my revolvers are SA cowboy style. Not really carry guns. Well the 44Mag really doesn't need to be reloaded as only I know if I have shot 5 bullets or 6. I do carry it as a backup when hunting.

I look at them as different uses. A speedloader is for fast reloads. A speed strip is for carrying extra rounds.

YM made a good point that with a speed loader you have to dump the entire cylinder to load an entire cylinder, whereas with a speed strip you can dump just the spent cases and top it off (such as behind cover) if needed.  That way you have full capacity,  with no waste, if you have to re-engage the threat.
