SEP Gathering #16
#1
Exclamation
Okay folks, it's getting to be that time of year again!!!

I'm putting out the date of November 3-5, 2017 as the date of our next gathering.  That gives everyone about six weeks to make plans to attend.  The location hasn't been picked yet as reservations can't be made at any of our usual stomping grounds for another couple of weeks due to Irma (trees and such being cleared as needed).  Looking at Seranova Tract or possibly a spot that we haven't tried yet.  Or we can all head out to the Ocala National Forest (we've been talking about this now for a few years and maybe it's time we do it).

Chime in here if you'd like to go someplace specific and we'll see if we can make it happen.  At least it will give us a list of spots to try out this season.  If you're suggesting a new spot please make sure it's both tent and hammock (as some spots don't allow hammock).

Chime in with things you'd like to see happen at this gathering.

I'd like to...
  • Make more char cloth
  • Look at different ways to make fire (Ghost has some great methods I'd like to try).  Maybe even have a contest to see who can make fire the fastest without lighter/matches.
  • Try primitive fire i.e. rubbing sticks together.  Again, maybe have a contest to see who can make fire primitively.
  • Maybe break out the pellet rifles for target shooting
I'll send out a text message to the normal suspects but EVERYONE is invited!  Folks from out of state are more than welcome to join us if they can make it to this, or any gathering.

Okay folks, chime in.... Smile

Sorry - can't make it. The band is playing Friday night at Quaker Steak and Saturday at the Hard Rock for Dean Guitars open house....

But yeah - I was just thinking time to start scheduling outdoor stuff!

That's great that you've got a couple of gigs, sucks that you can't go. Other weekend that would work is the 17-19 but didn't know if that would work for folks so close to Thanksgiving?

Something to discuss though...

Dave,  ONF may not be a good choice for camping due to hunting season. The primitive camp areas have always filled up with hunters, along with several areas US Forestry sets aside for camping hunters. This may also hold true with all other areas that allow hunting.  Need to check season dates for archery, muzzleloader, modern gun.

They've opened up two parks so far.  This one is open during the above date time frame:

Flying Eagle Preserve

It has primitive camping, hiking, fishing and canoe/kyaking. About 1 1/2 hours north of Tampa, actually a bit less.

Thoughts welcome.

Date change to November 17-20 as more folks can make that date.  Looks like Seranova Tract is back open so I will put in for a reservation there on those dates.

Edited to add:  Just made the reservation, will advise if/when it is approved.  The original date was already filled up so would not have been an option there anyway.

Reservation has been approved!

So SEP Gathering #16 is set for November 17-20, 2017 at Serenova Tract.

I plan on bringing my canoe and doing some fishing in one of those lakes.

I'd also like to have everyone bring one or more ways to make a fire so that everyone can give it a go.

Also plan to make more char cloth.

If anyone has a project they want to see happen then shout out!

Two weeks away!!!

Been getting cooler in the evening and hopefully we'll have a cold front come through to really give us some cool/cold weather for the trip.  Thinking about bringing the canoe and if anyone else has one or a kayak, think about bringing it.
