One thing Dave never mentioned is that a small/medium sized spinning reel will work very well on a fly rod.  One 5-9 piece 5-8 wt fly rod, fly reel, spin reel and tackle for both and you are good to go. Takes up very little room and weights next to nothing. A fly rod and reel can even be used just like a cane pole set-up. For those that want to try  the Tenkara style of fly fishing using a cheap investment first, get a crappie rod like Dave's. Works real good on Bass, Bluegill, Red ears, and others.
I thought the whole reason you brought your wife fishing was to carry all the gear you need.
